So, take the leap with these five steps (+ one bonus step) to getting your business off the ground and up and running:
Step 1: Research and Planning
Starting a business is hard and risky work. Doing the necessary industry research and business planning before you make any decisions are key. “About two-thirds of businesses with employees survive at least two years, and about half survive five years,” according to an article in The Balance. Businesses are popping up everywhere, but not all entrepreneurs understand the importance of setting the foundation for success, and that can be a HUGE mistake. First, figure out what you want to accomplish. What’s your mission? Second, a business plan that is well researched and detailed are essential. Third, incorporate your values into your business. Finally, make sure you do your homework: it will pay off in the end and you’ll be one step closer to reaching your goals.
Step 2: Ask the Right Questions
You’re committing time and resources to your new venture, so make sure you’re doing it for the right reasons. Starting your own business will for sure present challenges, which is why it’s critical you weigh the costs and benefits of each decision. Having answers to all your questions in advance will give you peace of mind.
Step 3: Choose a Business Structure That’s Right for You
Stepping away from traditional business models, a network marketing business model allows you to bypass the retail shop and sell directly to customers. This type of business model can be wonderfully rewarding, especially if you have the personality to go out into the field and connect with people daily. Additionally, the network marketing industry continues to grow, even in times of economic downturn because more people are looking for extra ways to earn an income. Supplementing your income by selling a product you believe in is an added bonus.
Step 4: Your A-Team
One big part of your financial success will depend on the quality of your team. Approaching friends and family is a great way to build a team with people who share your career goals and business values. Our absolute favorite part of working in this business is the collaboration that allows people to learn and benefit from the skills and resources each member brings to the table.
Step 5: Brand Yourself
Social media is your best promotional tool. “With more than 1.59 billion users, Facebook comprises of the largest blend of demographics of any social platform,” according to The Huffington Post, followed by Twitter, LinkedIn, and Instagram. Although these platforms are effective methods for marketing, be sure to understand your audience and where they spend their time. Social media keeps you relevant! Find your voice, share your story, but most importantly, brand yourself. “The overall goal with branding is to differentiate yourself in the market so you can attain your objectives, be those landing your dream job or becoming a famous singer,” explains an article in Forbes magazine.
Bonus Step: Live and Love What You Do
One of our favorite quotes by Deepak Chopra is, “When you make a choice, you change the future.” Our lives would have been very different if both of us didn’t make the decision to take a risk. Being entrepreneurs have allowed us to choose the hours we work, where we work, and even how much we work. And, you know what? We love it. Not to mention, we get to work together as a family.
